Mumbai 1993 Bombay blasts convict Mohammed Taher Merchant alias Taklya died at Pune’s Sassoon Hospital on Wednesday, April 18. 

Last year, special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) Court had announced death sentence to Merchant and was shifted to Pune’s Yerwada jail. Two days ago, Merchant complained of uneasiness after which he was taken to the hospital where he passed away. It is being said that he died of a heart attack.

Merchant who was considered to be a close aide of the most wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim was involved in sending people to Pakistan for training who later carried out series of bomb blasts in Mumbai in 1993. He also prepared fake passports of main culprits, carried out blasts from Dubai and collected money for arms and ammunition.

He also manned the meetings prior to the bomb blast in Dubai and these meetings used to be attended by Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon. Post the bomb blasts, he ran away from India and in 2010, he was arrested in Abu Dhabi.
