According to the latest reports, a 28-year-old man was arrested by the Shahunagar police station on Monday, August 30, for a liquefied petroleum gas leak and subsequent fire in a slum building in Dharavi, which injured 17 residents on Sunday afternoon.

The police stated that the gas cylinder did not explode, but the gas leaking from the gas cylinder caught fire. The accused, identified as Mohamed Miraj Siddiqui, is a labourer.

He was registered under IPC Article 337 (Life Threatening) 338 (Serious Injury Threatening Life) and 285 (Negligence Related to Fire or Combustible Substances).

Reportedly, after his wife told him that the cylinder was leaking, he took out the cylinder from his single-story building. The cylinder slipped from his hand and fell into the driveway.

Meanwhile, as per the preliminary investigation, it was found that someone lost a cigarette near the leaking cylinder and caused a fire. After the incident, Siddiqui left the area with his wife and children, fearing an attack.

However, the district court granted him bail. The police have asked him to submit documents proving that the cylinders were legally purchased by him.

For those unaware, the incident caused burn injuries to 17 residents, including an eight-year-old. Moreover, five people were seriously injured and were admitted to the hospital with 50-60 per cent burns. The incident occurred in a narrow alley opposite the Dharavi Mubarak Hotel.
