A family get together turned into tragedy at Juhu beach this morning when a 32-year-old drowned in the sea while attempting to swim.
High tides claimed the life of Tushar Khandvilkar, who was visiting Juhu beach with 11 members of his extended family for a picnic. Tushar, family members say, took off for a swim in the waters even though he was not a swimmer.
His attempt coincided with the rising waters of the high tide that sucked him in. The panicked family alerted the lifeguard on duty at the beach, but the guard too was unable to locate him. The guard contacted the fire brigade which dispatched a team immediately. At the time of publication, the fire brigade and NDRF teams were still trying to locate Tushar in the Arabian Sea.
Incidents of accidental drowning have been on the rise in Mumbai city and suburbs.
