As the code of conduct came into force on the backdrop of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the police had taken special measures to prevent problems in the city.
The police units in the city are highly active, especially during the festivals seasons, as citizen tend to misuse the power and not follow the rules, amid the celebration. This year, on the occasion of Holi, Mumbai Police was able to keep a close eye on the people with the help of CCTV cameras place across the city. Amitesh Kumar, joint commissioner of traffic police said that the patrolling started from midnight and they intensified their take action against those riding two-wheelers without a helmet, those riding triple seat and drink driving.
As per the records received, approximately 725 cases were charged under drink and drive on the day of Holi. Around 166 cases were registered under rash driving, 430 cases were registered for over-speeding, and 789 cases for triple seat driving.
Further, approximately 4738 cases were registered yesterday where people drove without helmet and 3827 cases across the city, where people did not follow the traffic regulations.
Notably, in 2018, 11,018 cases of traffic violations were recorded during the 12-hour drive. While 743 people were arrested for drink driving, 4,417 were held for riding without a helmet, 2,403 for speeding, 186 for riding triple seat and 25 for rash driving. The police had also penalised 348 people for illegal parking and 2,896 for other offences.
