In connection with an extortion case filed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta Fadnavis, the Mumbai Police on Thursday filed a 733-page chargesheet against bookie Anil Jaisinghani, his daughter Aniksha and cousin brother Nirmal.
As per the police sources, the three accused have been charged under sections 385 (extortion) and 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code along with sections 8 and 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act. Assistant commissioner of police Ravi Sardesai at Special ACB court in South Mumbai submitted the charge sheet.
During the course of investigation, statements of about 13 key witnesses were recorded and have been included in the chargesheet, as told to The Indian Express.
On February 20, the Malabar Hill police had filed a case of conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act on Amruta Fadnavis's complaint. As per the FIR, Aniksha initially offered to give information to Amruta Fadnavis on some bookies, through which they could allegedly earn money and then offered INR 1 crore to get her (Aniksha’s) father off the hook in a police case.
A senior police officer said that the section on extortion was added only after they found relevant evidence. On March 16 police arrested Aniksha while Anil and his cousin Nirmal were arrested from Godhra district in Gujarat on March 19. On March 27, Aniksha was granted bail.
