Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday, January 20, said that the state government will withdraw all the cases filed under section 188 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), against people who had violated various norms during the coronavirus induced lockdown.

On his official Twitter account, Deshmukh shared a video and wrote, “During the lockdown, cases were registered under IPC Section 188 against people who had violated various norms of the lockdown. The state government will be withdrawing these cases, following the judicial procedure.”

Deshmukh further said that the department will review cases and will ensure that citizens are not troubled.

As per the available data, nearly 3.08 lakh cases of COVID-19 lockdown norm violations have been registered across various jurisdictions in the state till date.

However, this brings relief for many people, including celebrities, against whom cases were registered for violating lockdown norms.

Deshmukh was speaking after meeting a delegation of NCP office-bearers who said many people were caught on streets during the lockdown and are now being sent notices under section 188, and cases will be filed against them. The delegation demanded that most cases were of people out on streets for genuine reasons and the home department should take a humanitarian view and take back the cases.

NCP state spokesperson Mahesh Tapase, Pradeep Deshmukh and Vinod Pawar had met Deshmukh on Wednesday, January 20.
