An auto-rickshaw driver was arrested by the Mumbai police for his alleged involvement in a case of robbery, assault, and sodomy against a 28-year-old passenger. It happened after an argument erupted between the driver and the passenger over the fare, as they reached the passenger's residence in Ghatkopar on Saturday night, June 3.
The victim, initially hesitant, finally reported the incident to the police a day later. The authorities responded by registering a First Information Report (FIR) and initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to the victim's complaint, the altercation escalated when the passenger requested the driver to stop at multiple ATMs during their journey.
The passenger claimed that the driver not only snatched his wallet and phone but also struck him on the head with a brick. He also levelled allegations of sexual assault against the accused. Through the CCTV footage, the police identified and located the accused driver at his residence in Ghatkopar. The authorities also managed to recover the stolen wallet and phone belonging to the passenger.
The accused auto-rickshaw driver was subsequently arrested and presented before the court on Monday, June 5. The court ordered the driver to be in police custody. As the investigation continues, the police are awaiting the results of medical examinations to determine whether the victim was indeed subjected to sodomy.
