Mumbai Police has arrested two people – BMC Structural Auditor Neeraj Kumar Desai and Assistant Engineer SF Kakulte – in connection with the CSMT bridge collapse case

Mumbai Police on Monday night arrested Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Assistant Engineer SF Kakulte in connection with the CSMT bridge collapse case. The arrested accused was given the responsibility to audit the bridges in the city. 

Police spokesperson Manjunath Shinge informed that this is the second round of arrest which has been made in regards to the Himalaya foot overbridge (FOB) collapse. More people can be arrested further during the investigation. 

In the unfortunate CSMT bridge collapse on March 14, six people were killed while 36 were injured. After the incident, Azad Maidan Police had filed an FIR under section 304(A), 337, and 338. During the investigation earlier, the police arrested BMC Structural Auditor Neeraj Kumar Desai and charged him under section 304 (A). 

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-inquiry into the matter assuring that the culprits will be punished. BMC, after its initial investigation report, suspended four BMC officials.

The police also found Neeraj Desai’s company - DD Desai's Associated Engineering Consultants and Analysts Pvt Ltd – to be guilty in the matter as they were appointed to carry out the structural audit.

Before the incident, DD Desai firm had marked the Himalaya FOB “safe” for use while suggesting minor repairs. The police had earlier informed while arresting Desai that there has been a major lapse in the case.
