While India crosses the 15 lakh-mark in COVID-19 cases, Mumbai still remains its worst-hit city with more than 1.10 lakh cases. Since the last four months, the city has been under a lockdown. Even though the state government relaxed the lockdown rules last month, life has not yet gone back to normal. Due to the coronavirus crisis, many people have lost their jobs and are trying to make ends meet with whatever resources they have left.

A few days ago, a burglary case was registered in South Mumbai, where two people resorted to theft due to losing their jobs. A complaint was lodged at the Azad Maidan Police Station alleging the theft of 100 kg of butter and cheese from the famous Canon Pavbhaji Center in Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) area.

The thieves, who had been hungry for several days, broke the grills to enter the food centre from the rare end. Since the shop had been shut due to the lockdown, the thieves couldn’t find any money. They resorted to stealing 80 kg of butter, 20 kg of cheese and utensils worth ₹1 lakh and fled.

The Cannon Pavbhaji Center has been a famous food spot for locals and tourists in the city for the last 48 years. The food centre’s owner P N Dandekar received a call a few days ago informing him about the theft at his store. Following this, he filed a police complaint about the theft at the Azad Maidan police station.

With the help of the CCTV in the area, the police were able to trace the thieves. As per the CCTV footage, the thieves had come prepared and even brought a tempo along with them to steal from the shop. After tracing down the tempo, the police finally arrested Santosh Thapa (20) and Karan Jadhav (25) in connection with the theft.

As per reports, Thapa and Jadhav are two local footpath dwellers who earlier sold scrap for a living. The duo confessed to the police that they committed the crime as they had no job or food left due to the pandemic. The duo confessed to selling some of the stolen goods and eating the rest of the stolen cheese and butter. The police have also started a search for a third accused involved in the theft. Both the accused have been remanded in police custody till July 30.
