Cybercrime cases in Mumbai have increased by 27% in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period last year. According to data revealed by the Mumbai Police, a total of 4,054 cases were reported this year, up from 3,191 cases in the previous year. Of these, 920 have been solved, and 970 suspects have been arrested in 2024.

Reported cybercrime cases this year from January to September:

  • 896 cases of investment fraud
  • 741 cases of credit/debit card fraud
  • 388 cases of job fraud
  • 175 cases of obscene emails, SMS, MMS, or posts
  • 108 cases of fake social media profiles or morphing
  • 94 cases involving fake websites
  • 68 cases of phishing, MIM attacks, or spoofing emails
  • 63 cases of online purchase fraud
  • 55 cases of customs or gift fraud
  • 45 cases of loan fraud
  • 35 cases of cryptocurrency fraud
  • 34 cases of sextortion
  • 33 cases of hacking
  • 21 cases of data theft
  • 17 cases of insurance or provident fund fraud
  • 14 cases of pornography
  • 9 cases of matrimonial fraud
  • 5 cases involving communal posts
  • 3 cases of online admission fraud

Online cheating saw the largest increase, with cases rising by 38%. Out of the 2,349 online cheating cases reported, 214 were solved, and 516 suspects were arrested.

Police data highlighted that certain cybercrimes saw an upward trend this year. Increases were noted in phishing, MIM attacks, spoofing, job fraud, investment fraud, pornography, hacking, insurance/provident fund fraud, fake website fraud, matrimonial fraud, and data theft cases.

However, some cybercrime types saw a decrease. Declines were noted in cryptocurrency fraud, loan fraud, obscene email/SMS/MMS posts, fake social media profiles, credit and debit card fraud, online purchase fraud, and sextortion.
