According to data from Mumbai Cyber, online fraud in Mumbai has surpassed INR 1,000 crore in the last 10 months. The Mumbai Cyber team was able to freeze INR 129 crore during the crucial "golden hours", which are the two hours immediately following the fraud, when the fraud cases were reported to the 1930 helpline.
According to official data, Mumbai lost INR 1,084,75,20,077 between January and the first week of November. This represents a 281% increase over 2023, when there were approximately INR 262 crore in cyber fraud cases reported to 1930. The Cyber Cell only collected INR 129 crore out of the total amount recovered this year, which represents around 12% of all reported fraud.
In 2022, following the helpline's opening in May, scams totalled INR 32.35 crore in seven months’ time, with INR 1.58 crore (4.91%) recovered during prime time. The Mumbai telephone line has received 5,74,276 calls, 72,503 registered complaints, and 2,265 FIRs since May 2022, totalling INR 1,379.21 crore in cyber scams.
Data from the Cyber Cell shows that Mumbai reported cyber fraud totalling INR 1,379,21,19,226 between May 2022 and the first week of November this year. The helpline received about 5,74,276 calls during the previous 2.5 years, which led to 2,265 FIRs and 72,503 recorded complaints.
Officials from the Mumbai Cyber Cell pointed out that because scammers utilise several levels to move money between accounts, retrieving money is frequently challenging. The cyber cell officials said that by the time investigators get to the last layer, the funds have frequently been transformed into digital currencies like Bitcoin and transferred to accounts abroad.
With assistance from the Department of Telecommunications, the Mumbai Cyber Cell has blacklisted 30,864 cell phone that are linked to cyber fraud. Data theft, code tampering, phishing, email spoofing, digital arrest, extortion, custom gift fraud, loan fraud, cryptocurrency fraud, investment fraud, employment scams, digital arrest, social media scams, and credit card fraud are among the approximately twelve forms of cyber fraud that are currently recorded in the city. The most frequently cited issues are digital arrest and investment fraud.
Mumbai had 19,895 cyber fraud cases as of September of this year, with 4,784 arrests and a detection rate of 21.47 per cent. Approximately 3,617 cases (18.8% of all cases) are related to investment fraud alone, of which 753 have been resolved and 868 have been arrested.
