The death toll in the chemical factory blast rose to 10 on Friday, May 24, after few more bodies were discovered from the site.

Moreover, the police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the owners of the company, Amudan Chemicals, located in Phase 2 of Dombivli MIDC.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to government hospitals for post-mortem. However, they were charred and beyond recognition. 

Official stated that there could be a rise in the death toll further as they suspect more bodies are lying on the premises of the devastated factory. 

Besides, the number of injured persons have increased to 64, including many women from the factories in the vicinity. They are being treated in at least six different hospitals. AIMS hospital in Dombivli is treating two dozen patients, officials added.

The area is filled with the acrid smell of burnt chemicals.

The Manpada police in Dombivli have registered a case against the factory owners under Indian Penal Code section 304A (culpable homicide) and sections concerning explosive substances and hazardous chemicals. Further action will be initiated after the work of ‘panchnama’ (assessment) will begin.

After this incident, the companies in the Dombivli MIDC area will be classified into three categories such as A, B, C through the industries, workers, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Director of Industrial Safety. They will be given the option to relocate the high risk companies to other places, CM Shinde exclaimed.

The Industries Minister has also been directed to check the security of companies in other MIDCs in the state. The incident will be investigated and action will be taken against the culprits.
