ED files chargesheet against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik

Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet in special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court against Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik, accusing him of money laundering and inciting religious sentiments. According to the chargesheet, ED has identified property worth ₹193 crore which is related to different offences. 

Earlier in 2017, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a complaint against Zakir Naik for his alleged involvement in money laundering and inciting hate through his provocative speeches. Later, after ED investigated Naik’s organisation on the basis of charges filed by NIA, a huge amount of unaccounted money was discovered. 

Earlier on December 22, 2016, ED filed a case against Naik and initiated an investigation against his associates. ED also discovered six different properties owned by Naik in Mumbai and Pune.

The investigation found that the most controversial remarks by Zakir Naik were made in peace council organised by the Islamic Research Foundation from the year 2007 to 2011. After submitting the chargesheet, ED informed that many youths were also influenced to take part in criminal activities.
