Ethiopian National arrested with 60 kg herbal drugs worth ₹1.5 crore at Mumbai Airport

The Ethiopian was carrying Miraa leaves, which are chewed and they function as a stimulant. The stimulants in Khat leaves work like a less powerful amphetamine.

An Ethiopian citizen was arrested with 60 kg of the globally banned herbal drug, Miraa (Khat) Leaves at the Mumbai International Airport (Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport). The herbal drugs are estimated to be worth ₹1.5 crore.

In India, tobacco is used as a stimulant. Similarly, in countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, Miraa leaves are chewed as it functions as a stimulant. The stimulants in Khat leaves, work like a less powerful amphetamine. Due to its side effects, the herbal drugs are banned in countries such as United States Of America, China, UK and Canada.

Mohammed Abdi (23) was held at arrival at the airport on May 4, when the security personnel checked his three bags out of suspicion, which led to the confiscation of the Miraa leaves. After learning that the possession of drugs is illegal and that it is punishable under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, the accused was arrested.

After further investigation, it was discovered that Abdi was smuggling the drug on the directions of an Ethiopian student studying in Mumbai for which he was about to receive $1000.
