According to sources, nearly 5,000 vehicles have gone missing in Mumbai in the last two years, moreover, 3,000 vehicles are yet to be traced.

Out of the 5,000 vehicles, Mumbai Police have been successful in locating 2,000 of them. The stolen vehicles are usually used for fleeing after committing crimes, carrying explosives, carrying weapons and planting explosives in terrorist activities.

Meanwhile, stolen vehicles were earlier used in attacks carried out by terrorist organizations, especially in lone-wolf attacks. The Indian Mujahideen had planted 21 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in 2008 in Ahmedabad, Surat, Gujrat. Moreover, most of these bombs were placed in Wagon R and similar motor vehicles and planted outside hospitals. Four of these Wagon R vehicles were stolen from Navi Mumbai. The then ATS squad arrested the two thieves, Mohammad Moin Abdul Shakur Khan alias Irfan and Ayub Raja Amin Sheikh connected to the crimes.

On the other hand, in an attempt to ease the congestion and parking problems in the city, the Mumbai Traffic Police had earlier taken strict action against vehicles in no-parking areas. Besides, the traffic police department has also declared a 24-hour ‘no parking’ for heavy vehicles, including luxury buses, in the jurisdictions of eight police stations in South Mumbai, including MRA Marg, Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Azad Maidan, Marine Drive, LT Marg and VP Road.

There has been a huge increase in the number of vehicles in and around Mumbai. At present, there are around 36 lakh vehicles in the city due to which the main roads and alleys in Mumbai are getting congested.
