As the Railways are getting geared up to resume operations for all, the Maharashtra administration has come out with fresh rules to deter those found violating COVID-19 health guidelines in public places.

The state government has directed the Railway Police to levy heavy fines against those who are found travelling without face masks. Moreover, Abhay Yavalkar, Director of the state government's disaster management department, has written a letter to Railway Police Commissioner Ravindra Sengaonkar to take action against those travelling on unmanned trains. The penalty amount will further be taken in accordance with the circular issued by the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MCGM) on September 9.

Meanwhile, MCGM is imposing a fine of ₹200 on people who are venturing out in public places without face masks. According to the Municipal Corporation's circular, the Railway Police has the power to impose fines on any person travelling on the Mumbai local or in the vicinity of railway stations without wearing a mask. Moreover, the circular states that an individual must follow all rules and regulations to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.

The suburban railway system had earlier resumed from June 15 for state and central government employees as well as employees providing essential services. Currently, the number of suburban trains has also been increased. At present, there are 1,410 special railway services on suburban routes.
