“A total of 12,000 posts of police constables will be filled in the state police. 5,295 such posts will be filled in the first phase very soon. Necessary orders will be issued to unit commanders,” Deshmukh said while speaking to reporters. Deshmukh happens to be an MLA from Nagpur’s Katol constituency.

He added that a horse-mounted police unit will be established in Nagpur, on par with the Mumbai Police which received its first horse unit earlier this year. Deshmukh further said that these police personnel will be equipped with body cameras.

He also shared some details on the crime rate of Nagpur city, which happens to be in Deshmukh’s home district, saying that the crime graph of the city fell significantly as compared to last year.

“Against 90 murders in 2019, Nagpur city registered 88 murders. 127 robberies were registered this year as against 147 such cases recorded last year. A total of 21 chain- snatchings were reported this year compared to 56 last year,” the Home Minister said.

The Home Minister also talked about the National Crime Records Bureau 2019 data which showed a high crime rate in Nagpur per 1 lakh people.

“However, the NCRB had based its data taking into consideration the population of 25 lakh, but the population exceeds 30 lakh if (areas under) police stations from rural Nagpur are counted,” Deshmukh said.
