Maharashtra government orders high-level enquiry into the Palghar 'mob lynching' incident

The Maharashtra Police has arrested 110 people in connection with the Palghar incident where the angry mob ‘lynched’ three people including two Sadhus and a driver.

After the shocking video of angry mob thrashing three people including a 70-year-old with sticks and stones went viral on social media, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday night said that the culprits involved in the incident will be brought to justice. 

“The Palghar incident has been acted upon. The police have arrested all those accused who attacked the 2 Sadhus and 1 driver and the police personnel, on the day of the crime itself. Nobody guilty in this heinous crime and shameful act will be spared and they will be brought to justice in the strongest way possible (sic),” the official Twitter handle of CMO Maharashtra said. 

The Maharashtra Police has arrested 110 people in connection with the Palghar incident where the angry mob ‘lynched’ three people including two Sadhus and a driver. Of the 110 people arrested, 101 people have been sent police custody till April 30 while other 9 have been sent to a juvenile home. 

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has already announced a high-level enquiry into the Palghar incident while warning those who are creating communal divide over the issue. 

In one of the videos which went viral on social media, the angry mob can be seen beating up the 70-year-old victim who is bleeding badly from his head. The man can be seen begging for his life as he is surrounded by an armed mob. A team of police personnel can also be seen controlling the situation. 

The angry residents who can be seen in the visuals of the assault are from Gadchinchale village in Palghar district of Maharashtra which is barely 125 kilometres from Mumbai.  

The three men who were killed have been identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70) and Nilesh Telgane (35). They were travelling towards Surat to attend the funeral of common acquaintance and were killed by the mob on suspicion that they were child-kidnappers and organ harvesters.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has demanded a high-level enquiry into the matter and stated that strict action should be taken at the earliest.
