The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Girgaon, Mumbai on Tuesday, December 1, granted some relief to Sameet Thakkar, who was arrested by Mumbai police last month. After relaxing the bail conditions, the court has allowed him to operate his Twitter account on a condition that he should refrain from his account.

Last month, Thakkar was arrested in relation to multiple FIRs registered against him for his alleged objectionable tweets against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya Thackeray.

An application was filed by his lawyers on behalf of Sameet Thakkar seeking relaxation of a condition restraining him from operating his Twitter account in an order passed on November 10 granting him bail.

It was argued that such a condition affects his fundamental right to freedom of speech. If the condition is not relaxed, it will cause a lot of hardship to the applicant, Thakkar's counsel argued.

However, the Additional Public Prosecutor objected to the application and said that as the investigation has not been concluded yet allowing him to use the account could affect the case.

Thakkar was arrested in three cases – one lodged by Nagpur police and two by VP Road police and BKC police in Mumbai. Earlier, on October 24, Sameet was arrested in Nagpur and was granted bail by a Nagpur court on November 2. Next day, on November 3, Mumbai police arrested him and the court sent him to the judicial custody till November 9.
