A person was cheated of INR 73,000 while searching for the customer-care number of a financial institution on Google. A case of fraud has been registered at the Khar police station.

The 53-year-old complainant from Khar had taken a loan of INR 2 lakh from a financial institution two years ago and had been repaying it regularly with monthly installments of INR 10,852. His outstanding loan amount was INR 73,990, which he decided to clear in one payment. For this purpose, he searched online for the institution’s contact number but was unable to reach the official number.

Meanwhile, he received a call from a person claiming to be from the financial institution. The caller emailed him the loan details, which convinced the complainant that he was speaking to an authorised representative. He then sent INR 73,990 through Google Pay to settle the loan.

The next day, the caller demanded additional payment, which raised suspicion. The complainant contacted the cybercrime helpline 1930 and later filed a complaint at the Khar police station. A case has been registered under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
