Mumbai Police’s Nirbhaya Squad will now counsel first-time sexual offenders. The Nirbhaya squads were formed under the ‘Saksham’ initiative to offer support to sexual abuse and assault survivors.

This came into force after the Saki Naka rape case incident that took place in September. At present, the city has four active Saksham units, one each in east, west, north, central regions.

They collectively have 25 cases since opening on November 2. The south region unit has not started yet.

It has come to light that not only the survivors, their families are also counselled at the Saksham centres. While counselling girls, sometimes doctors find that the family members are taunting them, causing them mental distress and depression. In such cases, parents are also being counselled.

Each survivor is counselled once a week for two hours. The counselling lasts for two to three months.
