A 4-year-old girl who had been missing for nearly six months after being abducted near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has been safely located at an orphanage in Varanasi, thanks to an extensive multi-state operation by the Mumbai Police.
The child disappeared on 20 May 2025, when her parents who had travelled from Solapur for her father’s medical treatment at St. George’s Hospital were staying near CSMT. A kidnapping case was registered at MRA Marg Police Station, prompting the launch of a dedicated search effort, Operation Shodh.
During the investigation, police discovered that the accused had taken the girl by local train to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and from there boarded a long-distance train to Varanasi. Multiple teams were deployed across the Mumbai–Varanasi route, reviewing CCTV footage at numerous railway stations and coordinating closely with Varanasi Police. Posters were circulated widely, accompanied by a public awareness drive.
The breakthrough came when a Varanasi-based journalist noticed a Marathi-speaking girl at a local orphanage and alerted authorities. The child had been found abandoned near Varanasi station in June and placed under the orphanage’s care.
A Mumbai Police team travelled to Varanasi, confirmed her identity, and established contact with her parents via video call. She was then brought back to Mumbai, where she was joyfully reunited with her family. Police confirmed that the girl was physically unharmed, though the kidnapper is still being sought.
