A sum of INR 3000 is being spent per officer and the amount is being released from the department's welfare fund, to ensure officers have a lifestyle with healthy habits.

Several frontline workers from the state government, civic bodies and the police department lost lives in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With an aim to promote healthy lifestyle, the Mumbai Police department recently implemented a fitness programs for the officers and other staff members whereby diet and exercises are assigned regularly to improve their health. Results will be checked consistantly basis which the diet and exercises will be changed. 

The personnel will also undergo multiple check-ups in between their sessions to monitor their improvement and accordingly their diets and exercise may change, said an officer.

A report regarding the same was published in the Indian Express which stated that a 100 police officers above 45 years of age, 20 each from Ghatkopar, Pant Nagar, RCF, Shivaji Nagar and Trombay police stations began their program on July 19, 2021. Their selection was based on the health condition and co-morbities.

The first phase of program included a detailed health checkup, post which their counselling sessions have begun with the experts. As planned, experts will visit the stations every week, from Monday to Friday. to monitor the progress and guide the selected members regularly.

This program has been implemented along with The Indian Nutrition Coach, which is owned by the daughter of one of the sub-inspectors. 

Sharing more information about the same, Rajkumar Vhatkar (Admin), the Joint Commissioner of Police told the Indian Express, “We realised that during their day-to-day activities, they tend to forget to take care of themselves and the department needs a program where someone is constantly monitoring their health and suggesting necessary changes in their diet and exercise.”

"Approximately, 95 per cent of the personnel who died of Covid-19 were suffering from co-morbidities," he added.

The aim of the program is to encourage officers to consume nutrient rich food and not junk food, the latter being observed among officials regularly across Mumbai.
