In order to curb offences of snatchings and robberies occurring in Mumbai's Juhu area, the cops have sought the aid of 23 volunteers who will act as "police mitra". These individuals will offer assistance to the police in the said area. The police have offered them t-shirts and these friends of the police will be placed at checkpoints (nakabandis) who will aid the cops when cars are stopped and documents are checked.

A senior police inspector of Juhu police station, Shashikant Mane said that since a few acclaimed individuals reside in the area, it often becomes the prime spot for robbers. These robbers visit the area with the aim of snatching and stealing expensive mobile phones amongst many other things. Since the area is comprised of many lanes, these robbers find it easy to escape. According to some reports, approximately three cases of snatching expensive mobile phones have been reported in the area.

The said senior police inspector had earlier put into force the said initiative at Sahar police station. It not only adds manpower to the force but also increases the involvement of the locals in such civic activities, he said. In addition to this, he also added that those volunteers who undertake noteworthy work will be lauded.

Volunteers who have been roped in for the initiative will be provided with guidelines and will be required to offer their assistance for two to three hours every day in the evening. Post which, a review of the said activities will be undertaken and the next course of action will be chartered.
