The deceased has been identified as Shreya Narendra Pati, a resident of CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai, and a student at BITS Law School in Kalyan, Thane. On January 31, 2026, Shreya left home stating that she was going trekking in the Lonavala hills, reportedly visiting areas around Duke’s Nose.
When she failed to return home that evening and could not be contacted, her family raised the alarm and travelled to Lonavala to assist in the search. A missing person report was filed at the Lonavala Rural Police Station on February 2.
During the search, a bag believed to belong to Shreya was found near Tiger Point, approximately 10 kilometres from Duke’s Nose, which helped focus rescue efforts. Multiple teams, including the Shivdurg Mitra Trekkers group, police rescue personnel, drones, and canine units, coordinated to locate her.
Using drone surveillance, rescuers discovered Shreya’s body at a depth of around 390–400 feet within the gorge. Due to the challenging terrain, recovery operations were complex, but the body was successfully brought out later the same evening.
An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall, including whether it was purely accidental or influenced by other factors. Authorities highlighted the difficulty of rescue operations given the steep and rugged terrain in the area.
