A 55-year-old pedestrian was killed after a large chunk of concrete detached from the parapet wall of a 17-storey residential building and fell on him in Mumbai's Chunabhatti area in the early hours of Friday, June 19.

The incident took place at around 12:30 am at Galaxy Apartment in the Qureshi Nagar locality. According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, a portion of plaster and concrete from the terrace parapet wall of the building suddenly broke off and crashed onto the road below, striking the man as he was passing by.

Emergency services were alerted immediately, and personnel from the fire brigade, police and civic authorities rushed to the spot. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Preliminary findings indicate that the concrete fragment fell from the terrace-level parapet wall of the 17-storey residential structure. Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident and determine whether structural deterioration or inadequate maintenance played a role.

Civic officials conducted an inspection of the building following the accident and are expected to carry out a detailed structural audit. The area surrounding the building has been secured as a precautionary measure.

Police have registered an accidental death report and initiated further investigations. The victim's identity is yet to be officially disclosed.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety and maintenance of residential buildings in Mumbai, particularly with the monsoon season underway, when weakened structures are more susceptible to damage and collapse.
