Pune Police arrested activists, earlier on June 6 and on August 28, in connection with Bhima-Koregaon Violence and also for their alleged connections with the Maoists. They were booked under Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA).
However, if an offence is registered under this act, the entire investigation and action shall be taken by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Despite this, the matter as a whole was handled by Pune Police.

Petitioner Satish Sugreev Gaikwad filed a writ petition demanding that the probe shall be handed over to NIA and asked, “Why did the police take action against them?” The petition will be heard on September 3, Advocate Nitin Satpute told Mumbai Live.
Earlier on 31 December, Elgar Parishad was organised and on January 1, Bhima-Koregaon Violence incident took place. The heat of the incident emerged in Mumbai too. Pune Police, arrested five activists on July 6 and another five on August 28, in connection with this case and their alleged connections with the Maoists.
Maharashtra Police said that the Maoists had a plan to overthrow the Indian government and planned to buy weapons and ammunition from Nepal.

All the arrested accused have been charged under UAPA and thus, any kind of action taken by the Pune Police against them and in this case is illegal. Citing the law, Petitioner Gaikwad has demanded the investigation to be handed over to NIA.
