Mumbai: Senior Citizen Scammed Of ₹68,000 After Ordering Alcohol Online

An Andheri resident was duped of ₹68,000 after ordering rum and beer from a so-called retailer in JB Nagar on Saturday. 

The 61-year old victim said he got the liquor store’s number through an internet search and the culprit on the other end asked him to scan a QR code on WhatsApp.

The police said that they have reached out to the bank to track where the money goes and also ascertain the location of the accused. Officials have initiated a further investigation into the matter.

This is one of the many downsides of scanning QR codes from unknown sources, a practice that is frowned upon by banks and cyber experts. Better vigilance is essential to coping with digital crimes that are evolving in nature with each passing day.
