On Sunday night, Shiv Sena leader Sachin Sawant was shot dead by two unidentified assailants. However, police seem to have found an evidence as the CCTV near Ganesh Krupa Chawl in Kandivli (East) has captured the image of one of the two attackers. The only complication is that the image is not of good quality, so the crime branch plans to enhance the image in order to identify the person.

Mumbai Police has formed a special team of officers from police stations across west and north region which are currently working on the case. Simultaneously, Unit 12 of the local crime branch is also working on the case.

Sachin was shot dead in a small lane between his house and a Shiv Sena branch office (shakha) around 8:00 pm on Sunday night. Sawant was returning with contractor Jaganath Verma on a Royal Enfield bike when he was stopped by two men and one of them came closer who shot him in the chest. Later, both these men fled on foot.

After being shot Sawant fell on the ground and Verma went running to his house. Sawant’s relatives rushed him to a hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. The dilemma for the police is that it was dark when Sawant was shot which is making it difficult to spot the accused in the CCTV footage or get any witnesses.

Verma has been held for questioning.

Based on statements given by victim’s family, the police are wondering if differences over a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project in the chawl led to the murder. A person from the opposite party has been detained after the incident for investigation.

Akash Developers want to develop all the slums situated in the chawl under SRA project. However, the slums are situated near the Lokhandwala area in Kandivali (East), which has led to the locals demanding ₹50 lakh for each flat after redevelopment, bringing the project’s cost to several hundred crores.
