In a major crackdown on illegal betting, the Social Security Cell of Pune city police apprehended six bookies from three different states during an IPL cricket match. The raid, led by senior police inspector Bharat Jadhav and assistant police inspector Aniket Pote, resulted in the arrests of individuals involved in betting on the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Lucknow Super Giants.

Operation Initiated on Tip-Off

Acting swiftly on a tip-off received by the Social Security Cell, the Pune police crime branch initiated a well-coordinated operation targeting a large-scale cricket betting syndicate. The intelligence suggested that the syndicate was operating from a flat within the Galaxy One Society in Kharadi, Pune. The information was promptly verified by the police team, leading to the raid on Flat No. A-902 on the ninth floor.

Seizure of Assets and Cash

The raid conducted by the police team proved successful, resulting in the seizure of various items and cash amounting to ₹5 lakh. Among the confiscated assets were 16 mobile phones, two laptops, a WiFi router, and other betting-related paraphernalia. The seized items serve as crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Bookies Identified and Arrested

During the raid, the police arrested six individuals involved in the illegal betting operation. The arrested bookies hailed from different states across the country. The identified individuals are Gaurav Dayaram Dharamwani (27) from Chhattisgarh, Sunish Tulshidas Lakhwani (25) from Chhattisgarh, Japjit Singh Atamjit Singh Bagga (25) from Chhattisgarh, Jasprit Manjinder Singh (29) from Punjab, Tarandeep Baljinder Singh Singh (33) from Punjab, and Lalkishore Dukhi Ram (37) from Bihar. Additionally, a bookie named DK has also been booked by the Chandannagar police.

Fraudulent Activities Unveiled

Further investigation into the matter revealed that the accused had resorted to fraudulent means to facilitate their betting activities. They had obtained a SIM card using the identity of Bindia Yadav, the daughter of one of the bookies, Japjit Singh. This revelation sheds light on the extent to which the accused were willing to go to carry out their illegal operations.

Charges and Legal Actions

The arrested individuals have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Maharashtra Gambling Prevention Act, and the Indian Telegraph Act. They face charges of cheating, dishonest inducement of property delivery, and acts done in furtherance of common intention.

Continued Efforts to Curb Illegal Betting

This recent arrest comes as another significant blow to illegal betting operations in the region. Pune police have been actively working to curb such activities during the IPL matches. Just a week ago, the crime branch had busted a betting racket during a match between the Delhi Capitals and the Chennai Super Kings, resulting in the arrest of three individuals. The repeated successes of the police demonstrate their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring a fair sporting environment.
