In recent times, along with unfortunate rape cases, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) cases are also on the rise, which is equally worrisome. In order to focus on these particular cases, Mumbai police will come up with dedicated POCSO units in 94 police stations across Mumbai, which will handle only POCSO related cases.

The initiative was taken by Mumbai police commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar who believes that the special units will help in increasing the conviction rates.

We will be training police officials about the POCSO act, how to take a follow up of these cases, how to carry out medical examination of victims, which rules to follow while taking the victims to court and many such nuances,” advocate Flavia Agnes.

The POCSO unit will be responsible to carry out all the necessary procedures i.e. right from registering a complaint to taking the victim to the court. They will also help victims to get financial help from the state.

This is how POCSO unit will function

  • Every police station in Mumbai will have a POCSO unit
  • The unit will comprise of eight police officers which will comprise more of women constables
  • The unit will work in shifts and will be available for 24-hours
  • The unit will be solely responsible for cases
  • The police officers of POCSO will be trained
  • They will also be trained to interact with victims
