In a major revelation, over the past five years, Maharashtra has seen a rise in the instances of spousal violence, which means women face physical and sexual violence by their spouses.

According to a data released by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), spousal violence for women between 18 and 49 years age has been increased in Maharashtra from 21.3 per cent in 2015-16 to over 25 per cent in 2019-20.

Meanwhile, blaming the Maharashtra government for the same, the activists have said that the they are not doing enough to stop or curb the menace in such cases. Also, lack of empowerment could also be linked to spousal violence, said experts.

In addition, the NFHS data show women operating bank accounts of their own have increased over the past five years though figures for Maharashtra are lower compared to other states like UP, TN and Punjab.

Besides, instances of sexual violence among younger women in the state experienced by the age of 18 rose from 2.9 per cent in 2015-16 to 6.2 per cent in 2019-20.

Experts have suggested that the violence against women is inflicted typically by people known to her and rarely by strangers.

Even as cases reduced in at least six major states including Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, nationally too, spousal violence has reduced from 31.2 per cent in 2015-16 to 29.3 per cent in 2019-21.
