Activists’ Arrest: Supreme Court extends house arrest of five activists till September 12

Supreme Court on Thursday, extended the house arrest of five activists arrested till September 12. The five, activists and lawyers, were arrested in connection with Bhima-Koregaon Violence and their alleged connections with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).


Telling the police to be more responsible, the apex court slammed Maharashtra government for the press conference conducted by its police earlier and showing evidence in public. A bench led by Chief Justice Deepak Misra heard the case.

You must ask your police officials to be more responsible. The matter is before us and we don’t want to hear from police officials that the Supreme Court is wrong,” CJI Misra told Additional Solicitor General Tushar, appearing for Maharashtra Government.

However, Maharashtra police demanded SC to hand over the custody of the arrested five activists in their hands so that it doesn’t hamper the ongoing investigation of this case.

After Pune Police carried out multi-city raids on August 28, it arrested five people, human rights activists and lawyers, including Vernon Gonsalves, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha, Arun Ferreira.

According to the police, they were arrested on the charges of their connection with the Naxalites and not because of their political ideologies. The raids carried out by Maharashtra Police, on August 28, were a part of ongoing Bhima-Koregaon Violence investigation.
