On Tuesday, an official, based on a report by the PTI stated that Arun Gawli, the gangster-turned-politician, who is at present serving a life sentence in connection with a murder case in the Nagpur Central Jail, is pursuing an arts degree course from an open university in Maharashtra.

Anup Kumre, the jail superintendent stated that Gawli entered the Bachelor of Arts (BA) course from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) in 2019 which is based in Nashik. This comes after Gawli topped an examination done on “Gandhian Thoughts” in 2017 by an NGO.

According to the official, unlike the earlier instance, Gawli failed in one subject each in the first and second years in the BA course. He can pursue the final year of the program through the Allowed to Keep Terms (ATKT) condition.

Kumre then went on to elaborate that, prisoners were permitted to enrol for multiple courses from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and YCMOU.

An aggregate of 229 convicted prisoners and the above-named jail that includes Gawli are undertaking distinct courses that range from a BA to an MBA, stated another official. Out of these, 157 inmates, comprising 14 women, were an ensuing BA from YCMOU and 72 inmates comprising two women had registered with IGNOU.

The official also stated that a murder case convict in the jail is pursuing an MBA. He added that universities send the prisoners books via post. The inmate’s exams are carried out at the Nagpur Central Jail. The said jail is reported as an examination centre by the two universities, mentioned the official.

Gawli has been behind bars since 2008 and is serving a life sentence for the murder of Kamlakar Jamsandekar a Shiv Sena corporator.
