Diwan Housing Finance Limited (DHLF) promoter Dheeraj and Kapil Wadhawan on Monday were remanded to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till April 29 by a special CBI court.

A central agency team on Sunday arrested the Wadhawan brothers from Mahabaleshwar in connection with the Yes bank fraud case. The move came after the special CBI court vacated the stay on their arrest on Saturday.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh informed that CBI has taken the custody of Wadhawan brother in Satara and the local police in Satara district extended all cooperation to the CBI.

“A CBI team has taken both Kapil and Dhiraj Wadhawan into custody. Satara Police has given them all required assistance and an escort vehicle with 1+3 guard upto Mumbai on a written request. The arrest procedure are going on. #LawEqualForAll (sic),” Anil Deshmukh tweeted on Sunday.

According to CBI, Yes Bank CEO Rana Kapoor entered into a criminal conspiracy with Kapil Wadhawan for extending financial assistance to DHFL via Yes bank in return for substantial undue benefits to himself and his family members through companies held by them, PTI reported.

Earlier, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take custody of DHFL promoters Wadhawans who are accused in the Yes Bank fraud case and wrote to both CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) informing them that the quarantine period of the Wadhawan brothers - Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan - was ending at 2:00 PM on April 22.

The Wadhawan family and their friends, consisting of 23 members, were quarantined at an institutional facility for 14-days and have been asked to stay at their home in Mahabaleshwar from where they were detained on April 9.

Earlier, the Wadhawan family and their friends got special permission from Principal Secretary (Home) Amitabh Gupta to travel from Khandala to Mahabaleshwar amid the nationwide lockdown.

The Mahabaleshwar Police later found 23 people in a farmhouse and registered an FIR for violating lockdown rules amid the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government sent Gupta on compulsory leave and is probing the role of the IPS officer in the Wadhawan family controversy.

The Wadhawan brothers were absconding ever since the case has been registered against him on March 7 which promoted the CBI to issue a non-bailable warrant against them from a special court.
