Shivaji Jayanti which falls on February 19, is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm across the state of Maharashtra.

On the occasion of great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji (Bhonsle) Maharaj's birth anniversary, we bring you some facts about the great warrior.

  • Shivaji was born in the hill-fort of Shivneri near the city of Junnar in Pune district on 6 April 1627 or 19 February 1630.

  • As per legend, his mother Jijai named him Shivaji in honour of the goddess Shivai, to whom she had prayed for a healthy child.

  • The Maratha empire got it's recognition when Shivaji Maharaj at the tender age started seizing the forts.

  • Shivaji Maharaj seized the Torna fort at the age of 16 and when he was 17, he seized Raigad and Kondana forts.

  • He was known for his military prowess and guerilla tactics of warfare.

Apart from Maharashtra, it is also celebrated in Goa and Karnataka.
