For all the booklovers in Mumbai, Kitab Khana has now opened again having battled a year of COVID-19 and restrictions with regards to the same.

Moreover, due to a massive fire last year, the interiors of the store had been gutted. According to reports, it will be a while before the store can resume its usual operations which included book readings, discussions and sessions for the children in the pre-pandemic world. However, on day one of resumption, a small ceremony was held which had warm faces as visitors arrived in masked faces in order to reconnect with the world of books and other readers alike. Meanwhile, virtual book discussions and events are planned, with details set to be shared via social media.

Even though the world of technology has dampened the habits of reading, world leaders over the globe have frequently attributed the art of reading with heightened pleasure and overall literacy levels. Moreover, young people have often referred to reading as a coping mechanism that relaxed them and made them feel happy, with almost one in five saying they used reading as a way to stay connected during the lockdown.

In addition, teachers across India have reiterated that they have found ways of reading aloud to their classes during the pandemic because it provided emotional support as well as developing literacy skills. Needless to say, even if it’s a gift or a coffee table piece, books are a must-read during these difficult times.
