According to reports, a signature campaign in support of hijab was carried out in Madanpura and Bhiwandi in Mumbai amid the ongoing controversy over wearing hijab (head scarf) in colleges of Karnataka.

To voice their support, more than 500 hijab-clad women gathered at Madanpura, added their signatures to the campaign and left the premises.

Clarifying his stance on the controversy, while talking to media, Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray on February 9, shared: “Where there is a prescribed uniform in schools/colleges, it should be followed. Only education should be the focus at centers of education. Religious or political issues should not be brought to schools/colleges.”

Samajwadi Party chief of South Mumbai area said that wearing of the hijab is a right that has been given by the Constitution and we are hurt by this unnecessary controversy that has been created over this issue.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan women activist in Mumbai stated that singling out hijab for criticism is unfair and discriminatory and we want this discrimination against Muslim girls in hijab to stop.

While talking to Mid-day reporters, activists mentioned that the Constitution grants Right to Religious Freedom as well as Right to Education, and the girls cannot be denied education because they choose to wear hijab. While the college authorities are free to decide their own rules, these cannot violate the fundamental rights.

The parents would not permit the girls to go to college without hijab and the authorities would deny them entry because of hijab. In either case, girls’ education is bound to suffer. They are resorting to hate and divisive politics by instigating students to wear saffron scarves to counter the girls in hijab, they added.
