Marzi Review: This is an engaging series with great performance by Rajeev and Aahana

Rating: 3.5/5

Marzi is an official remake of the hit series Liar. It stars Aahana Kumra and Rajeev Khandelwal in the lead roles.

The premise of the show is very simple, Dr Anurag (Rajeev) and Sameera (Aahana) go out on a date and the next day they have a very different interpretation of what happened last night. The big question is who's lying? Was Sameera actually raped? Or is Dr Anurag being framed?

In the very first episode, we get to know that Sameera is secondary school teacher, really good with her craft but she recently broke up with her long-time boyfriend and like any other 30-year old single woman in India being harrowed on why getting married is an important thing.

Dr Anurag, on the other hand, is a single dad. He loves taking care of his son. They have recently moved to Shimla because he wanted his son to have a fresh start after his mom passed away.

Both Dr Anurag and Sameera go out on a romantic date, at the end of which, they landed at her house and are seen having a good time over a glass of wine.

Things change dramatically the next morning, with Dr Anurag insisting that he had consensual sex while Sameera charges him of rape.

This leads to a police investigation and in every episode we do get some answer but with each answer, a new set of questions also emerge. With every new reveal you are forced to test your own allegiance.

The story seems to be very relevant in the times that we are in right now. And there is rightfully a subtle mention of the "Me-too" movement that rocked the world almost a year ago. Certain aspects of what a woman has to go through when she reports she has been brought out quite effectively in the show.

In fact, both Rajeev and Aahana have done a great job in their respective roles. Some of the support casts such as Vivek Mushran ( who plays the good samaritan cop) and Shivani Tanksale (who is Aahana's sister) are good in their respective parts as well. It would have been great even the same zeal was maintained by the others in the cast especially the one fielding some tricky scenes.

Also, we do understand that this is an official remake, but there are some things that the show makers could have improvised. Case in point, a big reveal is based on someone forgetting an umbrella. Now, in London, it is common for people to carry an umbrella as the rain is quite unpredictable but that is not how the weather in Shimla like.

Marzi is an engaging series and after the end of the six episodes, you are left with another big question mark.

There are a lot of official remakes of hit series that are being attempted in India right now. The only that I really loved so far was criminal justice and I think one of the reasons for the same was that I had not seen the British series. However, that is not true for me in case of Marzi. I had seen this series sometime last year so I was aware of all the big reveals and even what happens in the end, yet the great performance by the lead pair kept me glued to the series.

The main drawback for me in this series was the app itself. I tried watching it on an Android phone and an iPad and I feel that it needs a little more fine-tuning on both the platforms.
