12 Autonomous Colleges of Mumbai University gets Empowered Autonomous College status; Check list of colleges

12 autonomous colleges affiliated to Mumbai University have been given the status of Empowered Autonomous College. On the recommendation of the recently held Vidya Parishad, the Management Council has granted the status of empowered autonomous colleges to 12 autonomous colleges. 

According to this now these empowered autonomous colleges can be awarded joint degrees of university and college. The degree certificate will bear the name and logo of the university and the authorised autonomous college. As per the principles of the National Education Policy, such colleges are going to follow the course of awarding degrees in future.

Empowered autonomous colleges will be facilitated to start new certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate courses. At the same time, empowered autonomous colleges will get freedom for ancillary matters like starting PhD courses, fee structure of courses with the approval of the university. 

Empowered autonomous colleges will also get the opportunity to restructure the courses running in the empowered autonomous colleges, change the names of the courses as per the nomination of the University Grants Commission, prescribe the method of evaluation, announce the results, and the mark sheet.

As per the notification of the University Grants Commission and the State Government, 12 Autonomous Colleges affiliated to the University which have achieved excellence and high level status are being granted the status of Empowered Autonomous College for the next ten years from the academic year 2023-24. Maximum 59 autonomous colleges in the state are affiliated to Mumbai University and this is an important step taken by Mumbai University towards academic autonomy”, said Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai.


Pursuant to the provision of Empowered Autonomous Colleges mentioned in Section 123 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, uniform regulations were issued by the Government of Maharashtra vide notification dated May 22, 2023, laying down the standards and procedures for granting the status of Empowered Autonomous Colleges to Autonomous Colleges.

The highest number of applications by autonomous colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai for the status of an authorised autonomous college is a welcome development, which reflects the progressive approach of these colleges in the field of education,” said Principal Dr. Ajay Bhamre, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai.

Accordingly, the University of Mumbai issued a circular on May 23, 2023 inviting applications from the autonomous colleges for the status of an empowered autonomous college. A total of 13 applications received by the university were duly scrutinised and a total of 12 autonomous college applications were qualified for the empowered autonomous college. All eligible applications are accepted by the Management Council on the recommendation of the Vidya Parishad. These autonomous colleges include-

1) Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College of Rayat Education Institute, Vashi, Navi Mumbai

2) Nagindas Khandwala College of Commerce, Arts and Management Studies and Shantaben Nagindas Khandwala College of Science, Malad, Mumbai

3) Birla College, Kalyan

4) K.J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, Vidyavihar

5) Sophia College for Women, Mumbai

6) Shri. Vileparle Kelvani Mandal Mithibai Arts College, Chauhan Institute of Science and Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce and Economics, Vileparle, Mumbai

7) St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Mumbai

8) Hindi Vidya Prachar Samiti's Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, Ghatkopar, Mumbai

9) Ramnarayan Ruia College of Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Matunga, Mumbai

10) Jai Hind College, Churchgate, Mumbai

11) Bhavans Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (Unaided), Andheri, Mumbai

12) SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion, Mumbai
