Until Wednesday, October 6, 20-25 municipal schools are yet to restart for classes 8 to 12, as per reports. The schools still have vaccination or quarantine centres on the premises. The schools across the state have resumed physical classes from Monday, October 4, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued SOPs for the schools reopening in the city.

The BMC has now issued a circular on Wednesday, October 6, asking all the assistant commissioners to shift quarantine and vaccination centres from municipal schools to other premises.

Reportedly, there 35 municipal schools had vaccination centres while 16 of them had quarantine centres. They were supposed to relocate them to the nearest municipal facility, such as marriage halls. However, for a few of the schools, the officials were unable to find a suitable location, and hence around 20-25 municipal schools did not resume their physical classes on Monday, Oct. 4.

While addressing the situation, a civic official said they find it difficult to find an alternate location nearby for quarantine and vaccination centres in schools located in slums. Therefore, they have found municipal open spaces and are building mandaps to start vaccination centres.

On Monday, Oct 4, the attendance was 35-45% across many schools in Mumbai, while on Tuesday, according to the BMC figures, the number dropped in comparison to Monday.

Since the schools have just begun, it is difficult to say that the numbers have dropped because schools are taking different classes on alternate days, said a senior civic official. He further said that the picture would become clearer by the end of the week.
