The turnout for grades 8-12 across many schools in Mumbai was nearly 35-45% on the first day, with the management hopeful that the attendance will enhance through the days, stated a report by the Times of India. An official according to the account elaborated that parental permission and online exams have slowed the procedure.

Civic schools in the island city had more than 45% attendance. On the other hand, urban areas in the Thane district saw 40% attendance which in contrast to the hinterland was 54%.

The report goes on to elucidate that junior colleges in Mumbai could open only in a limited nature since students from grades 11 and 12 who are under the age of 18, aren’t vaccinated and thus cannot ply by the local train services. Based on the account there exists 1,772 unaided and aided schools as well as junior colleges in the city. In addition to this, there are 4.46 lakh students from grades 8-12.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray interacted with the teachers and students virtually and requested them to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols. He elucidated the “My Student, My Responsibility” campaign wherein he asked the academicians to become responsible for themselves and their students. In addition to this, the chief of the pediatric task force in Maharashtra, Dr Suhas Prabhu believes this is the accurate time to recommence students.

Maharashtra school education minister Varsha Gaikwad also visited schools on Monday, to check on the preparations made.
