Coronavirus cases in Maharashtra are rising exponentially, and the state government has imposed a lockdown with an aim to curb the spread of COVID-19. Recently, the State Education Department announced that students from Class 1-8 will be promoted to the next grade without any assessment, and the decision for Classes 9 and 11 was yet to be taken.

However, after thorough consideration, State Education Minister for Schools, Varsha Gaikwad, on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, said that state board students of Class 9 and Class 11 will also be promoted without an examination. As per reports, they will be declared ‘passed’ without assessment.

Earlier, she took to Twitter to share the information with a message that read, “In view of the ongoing situation due to Covid 19, all state board students across Maharashtra state from Class 1st to Class 8th will be promoted to the next class without any examinations. A decision regarding students of class 9th and 11th will soon be taken.”

On the other hand, SSC and HSC board examinations for Class 10 and 12 will be conducted as per schedule. Officials initially mentioned that the same will be held offline and more information was expected to be released later. But this has raised concerns among the students and some of them recently staged a protest in Mumbai demanding the same to be conducted online. Students stated that the classes for 2020-21 were held online, then why are the exams being planned in an offline manner.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray has also extended the support and demanded that the students of Class 10 and 12 should also be promoted to the next grade without any examinations. However, reports state that the state government is currently in talks to postpone the examinations due to COVID-19. Officials announcement for the same is yet to be released.
