To give impetus to the BEST and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) School kids, State Environment and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray and Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad had announced that the BMC school kids will now be taught Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum. The project will be initiated on pilot basis wherein this move will only be implemented in two schools. Woollen Mill Municipal School and Poonam Nagar Municipal School will get an ICSE and CBSE affiliation respectively. 

For the academic year 2020-2021, the admission process in these schools will start from February 27 and will continue till March 15. Only 30-40 students will be admitted in each class till Grade 6.

In the BMC budget that was presented on Tuesday, February 4, there was no separate allocation of budget for the same. However, BMC stated that there will be no new intakes of teachers for ICSE and CBSE curriculum and 20 BMC school teachers will be shortlisted for rigorous training.  Joint Municipal Commissioner of BMC Ashutosh Salil stated that the teachers will be assessed for their English language and teaching skills. These teachers will also have to clear a written exam. Of these, a selected few would qualify for the interview. Finally, only 12 teachers will be selected to teach in Wollen Mill school and Poonam Nagar school. The training for the teachers will be free of cost, however, whether their salary will be increased or no is yet uncertain. 

In a bid to revive civic schools, the State Government also announced free BEST services to BMC school kids during their school hours. With this, they aim to provide transportation to over 53,000 school children.
