Everyday 8000 BMC School Teachers Provide Quality Education To 3 Lakh Students: Aditya Thackeray

Tourism and Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray was all praises for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools on twitter wherein the civic authority claimed that 8000 BMC schools provide quality education to 3 lakh students.

The newly appointed Tourism and Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray recently tweeted about how 8000 municipal school teachers provide quality education to 3 lakh students in BMC schools wherein the majority of the students are from economically challenged backgrounds.

Notably, non-profit organisation- Praja Foundation recently conducted a survey which revealed some staggering facts about Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools. A total of 257 BMC schools have shut down and the enrollment rate in the last decade has reduced by 59 per cent. It was 67,477 in the academic year 2009-2010 which has reduced to 27,918 in 2018-19.

According to the State of Municipal Education in Mumbai, 41 schools have been shut in 2018 which is the highest in the decade. The Managing Trustee of Praja Foundation Nitai Mehta stated that the retention rate in BMC schools was at 90.5 per cent in the academic year 2010-11 whereas the same figure stands at a mere 22.3 per cent in 2018-19. She further stated that for every 100 students that were enrolled in Class 1 in BMC schools, only 22 of them stay in school till class 10.

In a recent Harvard US India Initiative (HUII) Conference, Aditya Thackeray said that the main reason for dropouts in BMC schools is because the majority of the students migrate to their villages or hometowns and some of them preferred working than attending schools. 

State Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently stated that Maharashtra will adopt Delhi's school model to improve the education system in the state.
