What happened to the orders to reduce the weight of school bags: High Court questions State Government

In order to reduce the weight of the school bags for students, the government had passed a Government Resolution (GR) to lighten the weight. However, on Wednesday, Bombay High Court while hearing a petition questioned the government about the implementation of the GR. Accordingly, the court has asked the government to submit an affidavit about the same.

Swati Patel, a social worker had filed a petition in the High court to reduce the weight of school bags as it strained the backs of school students. Accordingly, the social worker had demanded that lockers must be introduced in the schools for students and the number of school lectures must also be reduced.

In response, the court had directed the government to reduce the weight of the school bags and accordingly asked them to issue a GR. Thus, the government had issued the GR in 2016 and had asked the schools to take the same into consideration. The court had also appointed an officer per school who will have to present a report on the 15th of every month. However, the court pointed out that the GR was not being implemented properly.

When Patil found out that the GR was not being implemented, she filed an RTI and learned that only seven to eight per cent schools were investigated during 2017 and none of the reports for 2018 were filed by schools.

Keeping this in consideration, the court has asked the government to submit an affidavit and present the report.
