In the aftermath of an 11-year-old girl allegedly being sexually assaulted in a school in Pune, state school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad remarked that the government will install CCTV cameras in more than 65,000 state and civic-run schools, highlighted reports.

This statement comes in response to questions asked in the state assembly on Friday, March 25. Apart from this, the government is also anticipated to institute a policy to ensure the safety of girls in schools, stated narratives.

Gaikwad was quoted in accounts, elaborating on how the state has decided to install CCTV cameras in all state-operated schools. Adding that there are 65,086 schools of which 1,624 are already equipped with CCTVs. She claimed that the remaining will receive their cameras by the end of this year.

For the said project, the funds will go through the District Planning and Development Councils, MPLAD, MLA funds as well as with the participating NGOs.

Apart from the installation of the camera, its maintenance will also be looked into since the school in Pune where the incident took place had cameras but no hard disk, Gaikwad uttered.

In addition to these initiatives, Sakhi Savitri teams will be constituted to ensure the safety of students at the school level. This is anticipated to be completed in the next 15 days. The school education minister elaborated on how the team will entail members of the school management, parents, teachers, doctors and students, cited accounts.

The school will then tie-up with the local police station. The responsibility of the team will be to view the CCTV footage on a monthly basis. If they find anything objectionable they will have to inform the authorities, remarked reports.
