The Maharashtra education department has released a circular stating a change in the academic and exam schedule on Thursday, March 24.

The new circular stated that the schools across Maharashtra will have to conduct classes full time on all Saturdays in April. Moreover, the schools have also been encouraged to hold classes on Sundays, but that attendance will be voluntary.

Additionally, the circular mentions that schools have to ensure 100 per cent attendance till the end of the academic year. As of now, schools offer hybrid education to students.

Updating about the exams schedule, at a time when the city schools were gearing up to start final examinations for their students from batches 5 to 9, the circular added that assessment should be scheduled to take place post the third week of April and results should be announced in May.

The change in schedules have gained lot of knockback and left schools as well as teachers angry. While non-state board schools will not be impacted by the state’s circular as they commenced the 2022-23 academic year before they go on summer vacation in May, Mumbai school administration said that it was too late to make changes.

On the other hand, it has come to light that this decision will affect state board schools that have begun holding Class 1 to 9 exams and were to declare results by April 30.

Moreover, the academic year will stretch to mid-May if exams are held in the third week of April, said schools head. However, schools in rural areas are in a fix as most districts experience extreme heat in May, making it difficult for teachers to prepare final results.
