The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about several challenges, especially with regards to the education of children in rural areas.

According to reports, with the inhabitants of Adivasi padas in Malshej losing their livelihoods during the coronavirus induced lockdown, the children in the families are reportedly helping the parents now in earning daily meals. As digital education has not reached these areas, the children are forced to work.

Moreover, Adivasi padas such as Shiravali and five padas near Tokawade village are facing severe scarcity due to loss of income for the past several months. Citizens engaged in selling vegetables, food items on the street to travellers, are now left with no option as all picnic spots are closed due to the pandemic. In addition, these areas face severe electricity issues, pushing the chance of digital education further away for the children residing here.

Furthermore, due to the second wave of the coronavirus, and the spike in COVID-19 cases, this year, just like last year, online classes have been imposed on students in order to curb the instances of the infection.

Last year, the Maharashtra education department conducted an experiment to reach out to students through the Centre's Diksha app and WhatsApp. Exercises were being sent on WhatsApp through the initiative “School closed, studies resumed”. It was then revealed from various surveys that the number of students with a television available was the highest. Therefore, this year, the education department is trying to impart lessons to students through television for all classes. Moreover, a proposal has also been sent to Doordarshan for the same.
