The first merit list for the admissions to the first-year junior colleges (FYJC) was declared on Sunday, August 30, and showcased a massive rise in the cut-offs across different streams.

This comes after an overall increase was reported in the pass percentage along with a substantial rise in the number of top scorers this year. The highest jump is in the cut-offs for science stream, with prominent colleges witnessing a rise of 6-8 percentage points compared to the previous year.

This year, out of the total applicants in the MMR, 19,437 FYJC students have scored 90 per cent and above which happens to be an increase of about 20 per cent from 2019. The number of aspirants who have scored 95 per cent and above is 3,802, which is a jump of about 28 per cent from last year.

However, amidst the coronavirus crisis, the colleges are to follow the zero contact procedure for conducting the admissions for the aspirants. The students are to receive messages on their registered cell phone numbers with the details of the college allotted to them. The students can further complete their admission process through the portal.

Moreover, it is compulsory for the first preference students to get admission in the selected high school. If the first preference is not obtained or have been denied admission, such students will not be given a chance in the next regular rounds. They will have to wait until the special round.

Meanwhile, the members of the University of Mumbai senate had earlier approved 36 colleges for the academic year 2021-2022. According to the data shared by MU, the 36 fresh colleges are to include 16 traditional colleges, three hotel management, six law colleges, one night and one social work college each, two hospitality colleges and one college each for integrated education, physical education and sports.
